Where other special arrangements are needed to facilitate the assessment – for example, assistance with sign language or Makaton sign language, or wheelchair access to buildings where assessment sessions are to take place – these should all be agreed in advance. Time for observation should be included in the assessment, as this provides the opportunity to look at interactions and relationships. This ‘space’ is more easily achieved if there are two workers involved in the assessment. Checklists which are going to be used with more than one member of the family should be given separately, and preferably within a time-scale which prevents them sharing information.

Workers should make it clear that a precise translation is needed at all times. If, for any reason, words or sentences are not understood by the interpreter, s/he should inform the worker immediately. Workers should be alert to how tired the interpreter is becoming. Breaks should be accommodated. The assessment process/sessions may need to be reviewed in the light of issues/difficulties which early sessions identify. The family should be encouraged to ask for questions or comments to be repeated if they do not understand.
