Miseducation at ‘Empowerment Night’

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

A subject that is very important to me is the matter of women educating themselves about financial empowerment. Not in the women’s liberation sense, but more of a matter of being responsible about your choices. It seems as though the stereotypical expectations are that women may or may not go to college, possibly establish a career, get married and live largely dependent on their husband while raising kids and enjoying a somewhat “easy” lifestyle. Going between committee meetings, appointments with stylists and personal shoppers, and having the nanny or housekeeper do the heavy lifting does sound pretty pleasant. But the question that always leaves these women stumped is: What will you do if you husband’s income disappears from your life? Whether it be by death, divorce, or job-loss, many women are unprepared to face this possibility. And it’s not just a shot in the dark. The statistical rates for divorce are well-known and also the mortality rate differences between men and women. We are also keenly aware of the economic situation that is going on which greatly affects our job market.

Where Have I Been?

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I don’t even know where to begin answering that question. I’ve had the best intentions, but it seems that every time I get on track with something, an illness of some sort hits me full force. I’m still dealing with a UTI from several weeks back, and between specialists appointments, my demanding reading schedule, work, and the rest of life, it’s been near impossible to sit down and research a blog post. I have more ideas than time to write them all in. Of course, I could have taken the time I used to play Mario Kart Wii to whip up some prose, but we all need a break once in awhile. I’ve been dying to quit the full-time employment scene but it feels like I’m continually being met with resistance. I’ve even fantasized about being fired, although I can’t think of any grounds for that. Maybe all my absences, but unfortunately most doctors’ offices aren’t open after 5pm on Friday. Anyways, I hope to have something for you all in a few weeks, and maybe write several posts to be waiting in the wings so there aren’t too many more long absences from this blog!

“No Vacation Goes Unpunished”

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

One of the big buzzes lately in the American politicosphere is about Senator McCain’s bid for a “gas tax holiday” for three months, which would remove the 18 cent federal tax on gasoline purchases from Memorial Day through to Labour Day (typically when gas prices seem to rise due to increased travel). There’s lots of talk on the internet about how terrible this idea really is, citing that it won’t help to stabilize the economy, that we’ll encourage more use of a source of energy that is harmful to the environment, and that it is merely a band-aid fix or political tactic merely to gain entry into the presidency.
