June 10th, 2006

I realize that it has been quite some time since I’ve written anything and so sit back and prepare to read something quite long. I can hardly even remember most of the events of the past two weeks, it’s been quite the whirlwind.

I guess the most important thing to note is that I’m still here in Nova Scotia. Yeah, I was supposed to be off on my way to Houston yesterday afternoon, instead I put Mike on a plane and watched him walk through his gate, alone. Yeah, yesterday was an awful day. Today was a bit better but I still feel this empty hollow feeling inside, instead of that happy newlywed feeling that I should be feeling.

So, Mike got in on Monday, May 29th around noonish. We met up with the preacher that was going to perform the ceremony and then we headed into Wolfville. We were both exhausted, so we were probably asleep around 10pm. Mike had drove to Nova Scotia from Houston, so it was quite the long trip. It takes 3 days of almost straight driving! So on Tuesday we had to take a bus into the city for my eye appointment. We met up with Alyssa and Mandy off and on throughout the day for lunch and stuff, and I got surprised with an attempted laser treatment on my retinal tears. (Tears as in holes in this instance.) I was feeling really lightheaded and uncomfortable so we ended up changing the surgery to the Thursday instead, where I could have the procedure lying down and with a nurse present. So after that, Mike and I took the bus back to Wolfville, and I almost threw up from motion sickness, but managed to hold it together. After that, we snuggled with Alley and went to bed.

Because my Thursday appointment was going to be early, we decided to get a hotel room for Wednesday night, and ended up staying at this not-for-profit place called Point Pleasant Lodge. It looks really nice but it actually wasn’t. We got a room with two singles and had to squeeze into one (because we wanted to cuddle of course!). I was really nervous and scared about my eye surgery and started crying once we got to the hotel. Mike tried to calm me down, and then I took a shower and we went out for dinner at Il Mercato, on Spring Garden Road. I ended up having two glasses of pinot grigio, which calmed me down a little bit. After that, we met up with Alyssa at the Starbucks on the corner of Spring Garden and Robie, where I gaveĀ  her the list of names for the rehearsal dinner placecards that I wanted her to calligraphize. I also picked up my new favourite hot beverage, a Peppermint Mocha. Mmmmm! It kept me warm on the walk back to the hotel too, because it is friggin’ cold in NS in June. I got spoiled last year in Texas, but man, it’s friggin’ cold here! Anyways, so we were up early on Thursday, walked to the VG hospital (which was like 5 minutes from the hotel) and waited for what seemed like forever for my surgery. They ended up giving me a tranquilizer because I was feeling pretty anxious and nervous, but I don’t feel like it really kicked in on time for the surgery. In fact, I felt really tense most of the day, so maybe all it did was make me tired and emotional! After the surgery, Mike and I went back to the hotel where I climbed into bed. Mike ended up picking up our car rental while I stayed in bed. Later on, our parents showed up at the hotel and we all headed out to Bayer’s Lake to pick up the tuxedos and Mandy and Alyssa were catching a ride with us, so we had a few people heading to Yarmouth.

That night was pretty awful. The surgery made me nauseous so about 20 minutes outside of Digby (after picking up Alley in Wolfville) I began to feel reaaaally sick. I got Mike to pull over and ended up puking right there on the shoulder of the highway. The last time I puked was after drinking too much, so it’s been awhile. Mike decided to stop in Digby so that I could get a drink of water to calm my stomach, but after getting out at the Irving I couldn’t hold it in and puked again. I started to cry and was like I can’t keep going in the car, I’m too sick, so we ended up staying at a little motel. The next morning I felt much better, so we continued on our way down to Yarmouth.

When we got there, everything suddenly felt like it was going out of control. But before everything got crazy, I met Mark for the first time, that was pretty neat. On our way down to Argyle/Pubnico, we found out that Abuela (Mike’s Cuban grandmother) and his uncle (who was in the wedding party) were probably not going to make it to the wedding (the next morning) because of problems at the Newark airport. We figured that another guy in the wedding party probably wouldn’t make it because of the mess up. So I decided to change the wedding time. After a lot of phone calls and shuffling around, we decided on having the wedding at 5pm and the reception right after. It turned out that Uncle Mike and Abuela couldn’t make it after all, but the other groomsman, Wes, made it! It was actually better to have the wedding pushed back, because we needed the extra time to get everything ready and have pictures taken. Unfortunately, Mike got to see the dress before the ceremony, but it was a small sacrifice to keep some semblance of sanity.

I’m not really sure what to say about the wedding day itself. It was a good time. I was feeling awful when I woke up that morning, and I ended up being a little bit late for my hair appointment and stuff, but eventually both me and Jamie were all ready and we put on our wedding shirts for pictures. The shirts are all from Just Jen and they turned out GREAT. I was so happy that they fit everyone. I’m anxious to see how all the pictures taken by the photographer turned out. Anyways, after that we all got into our wedding attire and took pictures for a few hours, then it was the ceremony, then the reception. After that, Mike and I started to drive to Wolfville for the bed and breakfast, but it was pissing rain so we had to stop in Digby (again) for the night. We continued on the next morning, and got to spend one night in our pretty B&B.

The next day (Monday) was spent moving me out of my Wolfville apartment. I was impressed that we moved me all out and cleaned it from top to bottom in only a few hours. Then we made the trek back to Yarmouth for the millionth time! The next few days were mostly spent just doing a few things to get ready for Mike leaving and whatever, and we found out I wasn’t going to Houston which really sucked. Wednesday we headed back to Halifax so that Mike could fly out Thursday, and now I’m at Mandy’s.

I can honestly say that I do NOT want to be here right now. Not just at Mandy’s, but Nova Scotia in general. Anywhere that’s not where Mike is. I picked up a bunch of applications and I’m going to print up some resumes and pass them out. I figure I’ll be here awhile so I might as well get a job and earn some money instead of just spending it. Mike is going to start his new job and get us a place to live while I’m waiting to get my Visa interview. Anyways, tomorrow I’m meeting up with Mom and going shopping so that should be fun. I guess. I went shopping last night and it wasn’t really all that fun although I got a couple of cute things. My heart’s just not in it, I guess. Hopefully the time passes really quickly, that’s all I can say!!

It’s neat to read the “other side of the story” :)

I knew you weren’t doing well, but I had no idea how bad it was for you :( You put up a brave front!

Few notes for readers of ye olde blog!

    1) Some of the wedding pictures are available on the photographer’s site ( http://www.moniquedeon.com/simpleviewer/?album=Weddings scroll to the far right)

    2) The reason for Meags to be still in NS is that she hasn’t gotten her Visa interview quite yet. Once she does that then we can go to the Justice of the Peace and be officially married and we can live happily ever after :)

I had a good time with you here! And I want to have more good times while you’re still in NS. I know you’re unhappy about it, but just know that there are many people who want to make sure you have some fun on your last few months in Canada. Then you can have all the fun in the world down in Texas! Yeehaw!! :)
