Not Suitable for Children under 18

Monday, October 31st, 2005

I was watching Arrested Development earlier today and the warning before the show started kind of hit me off guard. “This disc contains adult language. May not be suitable for children under 18 years of age.”

Lil’ Update

Sunday, October 30th, 2005

Hey all. I just thought I would write a quick one to say that everything is hunky dory here in Nova Scotia. I haven’t been up to too much these days, been hanging out and watching movies a few nights this weekend, been studying today trying to get things accomplished. Been also playing a lot of Legend of Zelda on the GBA which is always fun, I’ve almost completed the game!

I’ve been keeping up with my new workout plan for the most part. I took a few days off last week because of achy muscles, and I haven’t seen any results yet, but it’s only been about a week, I probably won’t look any different until late December. The important thing is that I feel good, and I still haven’t gotten sick yet, so *knocks on wood* hopefully it’ll stay that way!

I created a Live Journal account so that I could comment on friends-only blogs that I know people have. So add me to your friends list if you have an LJ, and I’ll be sure to comment. I wouldn’t be checking the LJ for updates unless I choose to make it my poetry blog, I’m not completely sure yet. I have another Wordpress blog on the go that I plan to use for my creative writings, but chances are that the LJ will go untouched except for maybe memes, in that case I will not put memes on this blog anymore, and just use it as my “serious” blog, haha.

Anyways, I hope that everybody out there is doing good, if I haven’t heard from you in awhile be sure to comment and/or get in touch.

Ooh, Mr Prof is MAD!

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

Yesterday I got an email from my professor for Stuart England (who I incidentally have for two other courses) saying that we should prepare a debate for class that evening. He gave us the two sides of the argument and said we should prepare notes for it.

Well, it was around 10ish or so and it was pouring rain outside, and of course, I left my book back at the apartment. I was like, well crap this sucks. I did actually do the reading (now that all those essays are done I have time to actually do the assigned work) so I knew more or less what was going on and could contribute at least a little bit even though I didn’t have a formal debate prepared (which, honestly, you cannot do a few hours before class when you have 3 other classes that day). Before class, I did a bit of refresher reading on Wikipedia so I wouldn’t be at a loss for ideas if and when I got called on.

So I went to the class, and it’s very informal. Maybe three people volunteered any information. I did speak up once, but I missed which side of the argument I was debating, so I didn’t feel comfortable defending either side too much.

Anyways, the main core of the story is that I received another email from the professor this morning, detailing how some people were not putting in enough effort into the class. It was kinda of a nasty email, but I can totally see where he is coming from. There are a lot of people that don’t show up, don’t do the work, and sit there and download music all class. Of course, I do talk on msn during the class so I’m not totally innocent here, but his lectures are kind of all over the place and rambly. I try to contribute to the discussion when I can. But that doesn’t mean you can walk into class 2 HOURS IN and expect the prof to be ok with that. It’s a three hour course, yes, but geez! I know one girl that told me that we should alternate classes and give each other notes, but I have those 2 other classes with him and I said, “how about you come to them all?” I was joking, but she hasn’t come to more than 3 classes. That means that she’s not handing in assignments or anything.

I don’t know, I’ve missed one class, but I needed to work on my essays that I had due. There are only 5 left since it’s once a week, some people need to make a more concerted effort. I realize that it’s a lot of work in that class, but if you don’t have the time to put in the effort at school then maybe it’s not where you should be. I can see maybe missing a few assignments, but I can’t understand why someone would stay in school and just not go to class or do any of the work and just show up for the exam! What a waste of money, I say. I know I’m by far not a perfect student, sometimes I need to skip class to sleep or eat or just take a break, but I try to attend all my classes with some semblence of regularity.

I guess the moral of this little rant is: do the work or go work in a fishplant. Thank you.

Girl from Planet “Taken”

Sunday, October 23rd, 2005

The last year or so I haven’t really felt like part of anything. It seems like close friends are drifting away with increasing speed and I’m not sure if half the time it’s all in my head or not.

“The Week I Was Born”

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

I just wrote this for a class, but I thought it was pretty cool and decided to post it.

Thumbing through a copy of Macleans, a popular Canadian magazine, published in 1983 at first seems no different than thumbing through a copy today. The same news and letters, the same advertisements… oh wait; an advertisement for Commodore 64? Suddenly it feels like we are looking upon a relic of the past. I realized that where a web address would be there is nothing. Publishing quality is less glossy. In less than 25 years, so much has changed. Something that strikes me in the face of the Atkins diet is a commercial endorsing the health qualities of bread and its benefits toward weightloss. Take a step back into a time that I do not remember: the date is Thursday, October 13, 1983.

I like to joke around just as much as anyone else. But there are times that I don’t want to engage in casual conversation.

The Culture of Me

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

I’ve always been interested in culture. Pop culture, historical studies of culture… it’s so interesting. I mean, just ten years ago, North American culture was obsessed with boy bands. Now we’re obsessed with reality TV (although that is finally starting to go away, thank God!) among other things. I just think it’s so neat.

One of the things that has really been bothering me lately is people’s perceptions of me. Mostly to the slant that I really have no clue what that is anymore. I hope that people like me, but since a rather large argument with a not-so-great friend I’ve stopped caring so much what people think. I’ve learned that you just can’t live your life trying to please people. Obviously, I might try harder to please people that I value as friends, but that’s a mutual thing in the best cases.

What I’m getting at is that I’d like to start writing more about the inner workings of myself on here, maybe shed some light on the “culture of me”. What makes me tick, what makes me happy, sad, and all of that. I’m sure it’s not so much fun to hear me give a lifeless update on school, when really, that doesn’t do you any more good than learning what I ate for breakfast. Certainly isn’t any more interesting. I didn’t want to have a blog like that and I’m sorry that it came down to it. From now on, it’s going to get more personal. Of course, it’s not going to end up like “oh man, me and Mike had this huge fight and I’m so mad..“; those things are uber personal and not to be shared. (Parental fights, however, are still fair game.)

So, inner workings… go!

Psychic or Fraudulant?

Sunday, October 16th, 2005

While researching for my paper last night, I stumbled upon a very interesting Wikipedia article, about James Randi. At first I was a bit upset because I found him in the creationist article, effectively denouncing it with his “million dollar challenge”, but I found his hoax exposing work pretty interesting. I’m not really much for the supernatural in terms of ghosts and things like telekinesis, and it was interesting to see him debunk all these famous people, like Uri Geller and Peter Popoff, who were pretty wacky characters from the short video clip that I found [linky for you]. I always find the debunking side of it much more interesting, and I’m not sure why that is. It’s weird how I have a lot of problems believing in ghosts or aliens but absolutely no problem in believing in God. Anyways, I thought it was an interesting article and I’d probably read one of his books given the time. I wonder what motivates people to be fake “healers” and that sort of thing? Is it the money and the fame, or do they really believe in what they are doing? I guess it’s hard to tell.
