Beachin’ and Studyin’

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Man, it’s been ages since I’ve been in front of a computer long enough to write a blog! And surpisingly I don’t have all that much to talk about. Anybody wondering where I might have disappeared to, we ended up taking about a week and hiding out in Galveston, TX, in an RV park. It was a lot of fun, although we only spent the weekend actually there, the rest of the time we spent more time driving back and forth. We went to the beach and did some shopping. Spent most of the time hiding out from scary thunderstorms though, one of them crept up on us in the middle of the night. The RV was rocking back and forth in 60 mph wind and I thought I was gonna die. The next night, we had a lot more of a warning, so we spent the storm in WalMart, since there was a Tornado watch and warning that night.

Anyways, I’ve got some souvenirs on the way for some of you, so keep your eye out on the mailbox!

Other than that, I’ve got oodles of schoolwork to do to catch up. I’ve been completely slacking off since we went to the beach, I only did about two hours of work which is pretty bad for an entire week. I’m going to have to really buckle down this week and next. My goal to finish Spanish was mid June but I’ve only just started the 3rd lesson out of 8. I’ll have to revert to triple uber speed.

I bought a really good book the other day, that I’ve got about halfway through. It’s called Bridal Bargains. There’s a planner that goes with it that I’m almost tempted to buy, but I bought this nifty book of lists too, that I need to start going through. I’ve still got wedding planning on the road. I’ve been trying to find ways to lower the cost of bridesmaids dresses because the reading that I’ve been doing has been convincing me to stay away from Bridal stores. I might write more about the things that I’ve learned later.

For now, I need to stop goofing around and actually do some studying while Mike is out. If I want to graduate on time then I have to get my butt in gear!

Yo Hablo Español!

Today I had my first personal trainer session and my first Spanish lesson. Firsts all around! We’ve been keeping ourselves pretty busy, not to mention it’s great having all this time together and no rush to do a bunch of things since we still have three and a half months to ourselves. Mike’s parents are gone on a cruise to Alaska, so I’ve been cooking, and the two of us have been keeping house. It’s like play married, and I love it! (I know I’m cheesy, but I’m happy!)

We went to eat at Olive Garden today, and I ate so much that I felt sick. We went to the mall right after, and I thought that the walking around would make me feel less bloated, but I actually felt worse. We had to sit down on some cushy chairs and Mike got me a bottle of water before I felt ok enough to move around. After that, Mike ended up buying a really nice watch at this funky store that seemed to be tailored for surfers and skateboarders. They had a lot of Billabong and Roxy stuff, at any rate. He got a pretty good deal on it, and it looks really classy. It has the digital plus analog, but you can hide the digital display, so it just looks like a very classy watch.

After that, we came home because his Grandma had wanted to go visit a lady, but by the time we returned, I guess it was too late and she didn’t feel like going anymore, so we started in on my Spanish lesson. We worked on that for quite awhile, we’re almost through the first chapter!

After a yummy salmon dinner that I made (woohoo allrecipes.com!), we’re heading out to grab some ice creamy stuff at Mike’s favorite place. I’ll be drivin’ the little sporty car in the dark for the first time! Eep! :P

The Proud Owner of a White Dress

Wednesday, May 11th, 2005

Today was a very productive day! It started with me getting up early and making phone calls with Val about that darn health insurance from last year that they still want to collect on, and also calling an attorney about this immigration junk. We have an appointment with her at 4pm tomorrow, so we’ll see how that goes.

Then we grabbed our gym gear and headed out the door. We drove to the post office first to mail my pre study report to student loans so that they will send me more money, and then we headed out to Mon Cherie to look and see if the dress of my dreams was there, since Dad didn’t want to pay the 977$ Canadian dollars that the dress was up there. We ended up finding it for only $697.90 CAD. And it might even be in before I go back home! So we put down the 25% on it and started looking at bridesmaids dresses. I described what I was looking for to the sales woman, and she headed for the dress rack, and eventually pulled out the exact dress I was looking for! The only difference was the color, but they make each style in any color. I decided on the cornflower, and I just have to let all my bridesmaids know about the dress to see if everyone is in agreement. After that, I can get their sizes and start ordering them in. It’s a shame that they can’t come down and try them on in the store, but alterations will have to be made no matter what.

But yeah, so I got my dream dress, so I’m pretty pleased about that. I might even be able to get married in Nova Scotia after all, but we’ll have to learn more about that tomorrow when we go see the attorney.

We also went to the gym today, after learning that my favorite pink shorts from last year don’t fit anymore I’m more determined than ever to level off my tummy and get it nice and flat, or at least not protruding so much! I’m supposed to meet with my trainer at 12:30 on Monday, but if we end up going into LA we’ll have to leave on Monday, so I’d have to call her and reschedule. That’d be a shame, but it can’t really be helped. I still have three months to get my 4 sessions in, so I’m not too concerned.

I can’t wait for Mike to be done his finals so that he can be back here, although I’ve gotten a lot accomplished in the past few days, so I haven’t just been sitting here pining, as I’m sure he’ll be crushed to find out upon reading this. (Love you cutie!) We still don’t even know where he’ll be working this summer, since that dang job hasn’t gotten back to him yet. It’s rather frustrating, but I hope it all gets sorted out relatively soon. If they don’t get back to us soon, we’re taking off to LA whether they want us to or not!! Hehe :D

I can’t believe how exhausted I am already! It’s only 10:46 and I’m literally ready for bed. I still haven’t finished the first chapter in my history text, I’m poring over it too slowly I think, I’m going to try and pick up the pace without losing any important information. I have to cover 4 chapters for the first section, so I think that my first written analysis will cover a broad time span, so I don’t have to be so nitty gritty with the details. I’m also making a nice study guide for when I have to take my exam as well. So much to do, so little time!!

Getting Fit!

Tuesday, May 10th, 2005

Well, I’ve been here a week and I’m still getting over that dang cold. It’s kinda irking me, but I guess I’ll survive. Mike left yesterday for Nacogdoches without me, so he could write his exams (or take his finals, as he insists I say), and he’ll hopefully be back with me on Thursday night.

I’ve been doing loads of shopping with Val though, and it’s been a lot of fun! :D I got an awesome new swim suit that I can wait to wear, and a bunch of other cute things. I can’t wait to try the ice cream maker that we found for 10$, that should be fun.

I also got myself a personal trainer yesterday. Not sure when my first session is, I have four altogether, and a three month gym membership. Hopefully that will help with me getting into my old clothes a bit better. And when I get back to Acadia, I’ll know how to use the equipment in the gym and then I can continue my workout. Should be pretty cool.

I haven’t started with my classes yet, but I decided to only take one extra class from Athabasca, and not two. I can take the other one when I have more time. Or maybe next summer or something, I’m not sure. I can try and take a class during the school year as well, but my GPA is pretty low now, so I’m not sure if I’m allowed to overload.

Still have no idea where I’ll end up this summer, but it’s looking to be here, as long as Mike gets that job from his uncle’s company. I don’t even know if we’re still going to LA or not, but I hope that we do get to go. It would be nice to have a mini-vacation together. Most of this stuff should be wrapped up and for sure by next week sometimes. At least I hope.

Well, I’m going to empty out my suitcase and put things away in drawers, see if I can stop living out of a suitcase!

Revisiting Texas and Sickdom

Wednesday, May 4th, 2005

I’m here!! I’d be a lot happier about it if I wasn’t feeling so icky, though. Although Mike is awesometastic and the air is much warmer so I’m a fairly happy girl.

My flight was pretty routine, no big surprises or bad things until I actually got to Houston. I got on the plane and read my book, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, and somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, I started to get a scratchy throat. I didn’t think too much of it, I’ve been bad lately and haven’t been taking my nosespray so generally, that causes me to get a sore throat, but I thought that once I landed in Houston and took it then I would be ok.

Landed in Boston with no troubles and plenty of time to spare. We were in one of those four seats to an row plane, so they landed us somewhere close and then bussed us over to the Customs area by something called a “Massport bus”, which I thought was kinda punny. (Being in Massachusetts made it even punnier!) After that I got to see an Agent after waiting for like 2 minutes, and he looked at my card, asked me how long I was staying, and then sent me on my way. When I picked up my bags, one of the employees recommended I take one of the carts (which was actually free) and after heaving those two heavy bags up on the cat, I wheeled to baggage transfer, dumped those off, and then headed for the elevator like the woman directed me.

I actually passed by the elevator a couple times, since it was hidden away, and I also had to pee really bad so I was half looking for a restroom at the same time. Once I got to the floor I was supposed to be at, I stood and kinda looked at the signs not really sure where to go. A nice old man next to me asked me I needed to go to Terminal A, and when I said yes, he pointed down the hall to my left, and I thanked him and started walking down the longest friggin’ hallway ever. I got to see a bit of the city from the huge windows, so that was nice. Then I zipped through security, but of course the xray machine at the line that I decided to go in died and they had to cut me in front of someone else in the other line. But I didn’t beep or anything so I just sailed on outta there and found a restroom! :)

I bought some fruit there to alleviate the sore throat and then boarded my flight to Atlanta. I finished my book halfway through that flight and figured I could buy the second book in the series at a bookstore there, but the bookstore had snotty salesladies that kinda pointed in a general direction when I asked for the book. They kinda pissed me off, so I left that store and tried to find another one to no avail. I decided to just go find my gate and they started boarding really quickly after I sat down. I really wished I had bought something to read though, the flight was 2 hours long and you can only look at the SkyMall catalogue so many times (Although there are some nifty things in there!)

After I landed, I went to baggage claim, where Mike and I agreed to meet because I’m silly and don’t know how to navigate that huge airport, and he wasn’t there. I ended up calling him after I collected my enormous too bags and it turns out he was in C Terminal and I was in A, A being where Delta flights are usually, and C being Continental mostly. I usually fly Continental so that’s where we made the error. It didn’t take him very long to come get me, and then we tracked down his truck and went to the hotel.

We were staying in StudioPLUS Suites, which wasn’t too shabby, but smelled faintly like cigarette smoke even though we had a non-smoking room. Instead of going out to eat (since it was late and I wasn’t feeling up to fast food), we picked up some groceries at a nearby Kroger and cooked a little supper in our kitchenette.

So now, I’m just kicking back and trying to get healthier and relax before I start up my summer courses. I’ll be back soon with more stories of my four Texas-bound months!

True story!
